THE SUN: Test for the U.S

By GEORGE PASCOE-WATSON

BARACK Obama’s victory will put modern day America to the test. Voters must choose between their first black leader — or their oldest President. And the world will find out if the US has dealt with its explosive race problems. Obama’s triumph over Hillary Clinton is the chance for genuine change in history.

But America faces a thrilling battle between now and November’s election. Wily Republican John McCain is a Vietnam War veteran who won’t give way easily. He stands firm on the Iraq War and the scourge of terrorism everywhere. And he could tempt many Democrats to his camp because of his liberal stance on social issues like gay marriage and abortion.

Promises

Obama must yet reach out to America’s church-going millions and convince them he is on their side. He must persuade many white working class voters it is OK to back a black man. Victory for Obama would undoubtedly help David Cameron’s Tories. It could send a signal around the world that it is time for a new, younger generation of political leader.

But for ordinary Americans, there are more pressing issues the challengers must face. Voters need to know how each man promises to tackle the economic slump. Obama must win over middle-aged white women who were fiercely loyal to Clinton. And McCain must reconnect with Republicans who don’t like his liberal attitudes.

One thing is sure. We’re set for one hell of a race.
