SKY NEWS: El Salvador Earthquake Triggers Small Tsunami

REPORT: A 7.4 magnitude earthquake off the coast of El Salvador has generated a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

"Sea level readings confirm that a tsunami was generated," it said in a bulletin.

A warning that a potentially destructive tsunami could hit Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama and Mexico was cancelled soon after.

David Walsh, an oceanographer with the Pacific Tsunami Center in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, said that a swell of 20cm had been registered off Acajutla, El Salvador.

The quake struck 74 miles south of Usulutan department in the southeast of the country at a depth of 33 miles, the US Geological Survey said.

There were no immediate reports of damage to coastal areas or to shipping.
