REPORT: The FBI has agreed to review a controversial fatal officer-involved shooting that sparked days of unrest and violence in Anaheim.
Anaheim officials said they have also asked state officials to launch a review of the Saturday incident, which is already being probed by the Orange County district attorney. The district attorney has asked the public to share any photos or video of the shooting and its aftermath.
During unrest Tuesday night, people grabbed rocks from a construction site at Santa Ana Street and Anaheim Boulevard and hurled them at officers. Others in the area ignited a fire in the weeds and in trash bins as they were chased by police.
Officials said they will continue to crack down on unlawful protests and vandalism if there are more protests in the coming days.
"Anaheim is a strong community and a community that works together to solve its problems," Mayor Tom Tait said at a news conference Wednesday morning. "I think it's important for city officials to hear from people we serve … but violence and vandalism have no part in the conversation."
Tait said he was disturbed by the Tuesday night protesters -- about two-thirds of whom city officials believe are not from Anaheim -- who took "advantage of this evening of dialogue to try to create chaos in our downtown neighborhoods."
"They chose violence and vandalism over respectful communications," Tait said.
Anaheim Police Chief John Welter said the crowd grew to more than 1,000 at times. Protests were allowed to continue, he said, until the violence escalated and became threatening to police and others in the area.

20 arrested, 5 injured in Anaheim melee - OC Register
At least five people were reported hurt in the unrest, with crowds setting fires, smashing windows and throwing rocks and other projectiles at officers in riot gear who fired non-lethal rounds at demonstrators refusing to disperse.
One person was taken to a hospital after being struck in the head with a pepper ball fired by police. Two Register reporters were injured – one was hit in the head with a rock and the other hit in the foot with a projectile. Both will get medical attention today.
A police officer suffered a minor arm injury, said Sgt. Bob Dunn, an Anaheim police spokesman.
Additionally, one person was injured during a fight among protesters.

Anaheim police try to shoo away protesters - The Orange County Register
They were rebuffed by police officers, who citing fire standards, would not let anyone else into the crowded Council Chambers, where the council held its regular meeing and talked about what the crowd was upset about: two police shootings over the weekend.
A half-dozen officers blocked City Hall's entrance, while the crowd gathered around and hurled obscenities. As the crowd pressed closer, two dozen officers with helmets and batons came out the front door and pushed the protesters back, angering them.
After several minutes, some protesters called for everyone to hit the street.
For the next four-hours-plus, the tug-of-war between protesters and police persisted.
The crowd marched along Anaheim Boulevard to Lincoln Avenue, going into the street and blocking traffic.
Some pounded traffic signs and pulled trash cans into the street, while others pulled back the cans. One man, with a bullhorn, shouted how the protest was to be peaceful. A boy spray-painted a utility box. Some protesters grabbed sand from flower beds, and a traffic cone, and threw then at officers, who showed restraint.

OUT OF CONTROL? Anaheim has second police shooting in 2 days
The shooting climaxed an incident that began around 11:20 p.m. Sunday, when anti-gang officers spotted a known gang member on probation in what they soon determined was a stolen car, Anaheim police Sgt. Bob Dunn said. They were pursuing the vehicle when the driver lost control on on West Guinida Lane, and two men and a woman bailed.
“The officers were in foot pursuit for about a half-block when one male suspect fired at the officers,” Dunn said. “The officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was dead at the scene.”
A gun was found next to the body, he said, adding that the second male suspect was detained, but the female got away, and a perimeter search for her was under way.
It was not immediately determined if the suspect who fired on officers was the gang member on probation, Dunn said.
