Detroit Declares Bankruptcy
REPORT: "The city of Detroit filed the largest municipal bankruptcy case in U.S. history Thursday afternoon, culminating a decades-long slide that transformed the nation’s iconic industrial town into a model of urban decline crippled by population loss, a dwindling tax base and financial problems. The 16-page petition was filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Detroit. Gov. Rick Snyder’s office was making plans this afternoon to hold a 10 a.m. Friday morning news conference at the Maccabees Building, 5057 Woodward in Midtown, according to his office. It’s the same location where the governor declared a financial emergency for Detroit on March 1."

OP ED: BlackBerry vs Android vs iOS vs Windows Phone 8 - Part 5
BlackBerry
Here we go! Finally, after going through the other three major mobile operating systems available on the market, I get to really flesh out what makes BlackBerry stand out and still relevant today. I should point out that all this debate about a "third operating system" isn't really a debate. BlackBerry still holds at least twice as much market share compared to Windows Phone. Until the dust settles with the Windows Phone 8 launch, we'll see how well it was received or if it was ignored.
There's no doubt BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) has struggled in the past few years. They dropped the ball hard. You know what they say, the bigger they are the harder they fall. But the smartphone giant isn't out even though many analyst say its still down for the count. Yes, they are still hanging on in the worldwide market, but its the North American market BlackBerry needs to regain. The BlackBerry operating system is about 15 years old. It was never meant to be optimized for touch or handle heavy media content and graphic games. Still, RIM tried what they could to extend the life of the Java-heavy OS. The latest and last OS iteration was OS 7. The OS was more fluid with eye-popping graphics and, at last, a browser that could compete with the leaders. But the dreadful drawbacks of the OS remained front and center no matter how big of a processor RIM threw at it (1.2Ghz processor). The antiquated OS just could not handle so much. The Hour Glass of Doom, the memory leaks, the epic boot times, the battery pulls, the truncated device usage while installing apps, and the lengthy but risky software upgrades were always the elephant in the room RIM could not address. Still, the platform had its advantages that made people like me put up with the drawbacks.

OP ED: BlackBerry vs Android vs iOS vs Windows Phone 8 - Part 4
Windows Phone 8
If there is any other mobile operating system out there that has the greatest potential but still lacking developer and carrier support its Windows Phone. Windows Phone 7 radically changed the Windows Phone experience. I still remember my father carting around a Windows Mobile device. It was a brick with a stylus, a slideout, horizontal keyboard, and the complete Microsoft office suite. When the time came to upgrade he went BlackBerry. I never saw a Windows Mobile device again.
I think it was 2010 that Microsoft introduced Windows Phone 7. The operating system was new, fresh, and appealing. The OS was responsive, fluid, and fast, but the lack of features and developer support made the phone go unnoticed. Microsoft then pushed out the Mango update bringing the OS to 7.5 and adding a lot of features. It was more catch up than a ground-breaking mobile experience. Finally, Windows Phone 8 arrived amid tremendous hype and curiosity.

OP ED: BlackBerry vs Android vs iOS vs Windows Phone 8 - Part 3
Ah, Apple's iPhone. This phone redefined the smartphone industry and made a bunch of people unfamiliar with technology sounds more "techy". More people now talk about "apps," "megapixels," and "the gee bees". They have no idea what they're really talking about, but somehow they gained the right to talk down to those who don't use an iPhone.
"Wow, you're still using a BlackBerry?"
My bitterness towards Apples perhaps started with the iPhone 3 and then later with the iPad. I was a big fan of the original iMac and the iPod. Those two devices were always too expensive for me to afford so I often held them as my benchmark. Since the introduction of those two products, Apple set the standard for hardware design and the new digital library. iTunes offered access to music and movies without having to wait for shipping. These items were instantly available upon purchase and easily transferable to an iPod or later an iPhone. Welcome to the Digital Age! Well, Apple then turned out to be a tyrant dictating to its consumers what they "needed" even if the product Apple offered wasn't an evolutionary leap forward from their current device or software. Features such as "copy/paste," multitask capability, and folders were available on all its major competitors (Yes, even BlackBerry had it!), but when the features finally came to the iPhone, suddenly "Apple changes everything - again!" Really? Catching up equals to changing the playing field? Never mind that Apple lied when introducing features available elsewhere as "new" to the smartphone world, its the fact that its devoted followers, the technology illiterate groups known as iSheep, believed the lies.

OP ED: BlackBerry vs Android vs iOS vs Windows Phone 8 - Part 2
Android
My first Android device was the original Motorola Droid on Verizon. I loved having a touchscreen and a slide-out keyboard, but it wasn't a BlackBerry so that run was short lived. When business picked up for my company, I needed two phones. I got the Motorola Droid 2 on Verizon and used the BlackBerry Bold 9700 on T-Mobile. When the economy took a hard hit in 2008, I had to eliminate one of my lines. I got rid of my T-Mobile line and replaced my Droid 2 with my Verizon BlackBerry Storm2. I would eventually try my hand at android again with the HTC Incredible, the HTC Incredible 2, the HTC Thunderbolt, and the HTC Rezound. The longest time I used an android device was on the Droid 2 followed closely by the Incredible. Alas, the Froyo and Gingerbread updates were always lacking, slow, and buggy.

OP ED: BlackBerry vs Android vs iOS vs Windows Phone 8 - Part 1
It's no secret I am a devote BlackBerry user. I am currently typing out this article on my BlackBerry PlayBook! But even I must admit when something is missing or when the competition has an awesome feature or advantage. I been inspired by CrackBerry Kevin from crackberry.com to try out different mobile devices as users like me continue to wait for the long-awaited BlackBerry 10 platform to launch January 30, 2013.

Post-storm anger grows, especially outside Manhattan | Reuters
Post-storm anger grows, especially outside Manhattan | Reuters: Frustration grew for superstorm Sandy's victims in the U.S. Northeast on Friday, many of whom were left with no power, no gasoline and little information about when their shattered lives might return to normal.
While Manhattan prepared to host the annual New York City Marathon on Sunday, acute gasoline shortages in the city's storm-battered outer boroughs and New Jersey led to long lines and short tempers. Tankers finally began entering New York Harbor on Thursday, and a tanker carrying 2 million barrels of gasoline arrived at 2 a.m. (0600 GMT) on Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. Sandy, which brought a record storm surge to coastal areas, killed at least 102 people after slamming into the U.S. Northeast on Monday. Forty-one died in New York City, about half of them in Staten Island, which was overrun by a wall of water.
