No, I didn't see the film so I bought this on blind-faith. It's been said that composers do their best work under pressure. That's a bold statement but James Newton Howard proved that it's possible (e.g. Waterworld, King Kong). James Horner was ill during the scoring of this film and succeeded in composing one of his greatest works ever.
"Krull Main Title and Colwyn's Arrival" is the track that greets us at the beginning of the Supercollector's Label 2-disc release. It starts off with low strings slowly progressing into a loud, bold fanfare with chorus. This is one of the better songs of the first disc.
"The Slayers Attack" is the longest track of the album. It starts off romantic but then is suddenly interrupted by violent movement of strings as something terrible is happening onscreen.
"Colwyn and Lyssa Love Theme" is a wonderful, romantic theme. It sounds strangely familiar maybe because it used in many trailers. This track is composed similarly to "Luke and Leia" from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
"Ride of the Firemares" is a fantastic, racing track. This is one of the best of the album because it's by far the most swashbuckling and sweeping track of them all.
"Battle of the Parapets" is similar to "Ride of the Firemares" only that it's about half as long. Still, this is another great track.
"The Death of the Beast and the Destruction of the Black Forest" is the darkest and most tense track of the album. It's also one of the longest tracks clocking in at 8 minutes and 32 seconds. Once the track begins, it doesn't let up until the climatic finish. I'd rate this track as the best of the bunch because of the sheer power and intensity of the London Symphony Orchestra's performance adding to the doom the track title represents.
"Epilogue and End Title" is basically a small suite of the important main themes of the album. This is another good track.
This is a rare collector's item so don't be surprised at the steep price of the album. I paid nearly $70 for my copy and it is worth the price, although it's possible to find this one at a better price on specialty outlets.
My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
